Want to have some messy fun with your kids?? How about baking cookies! We made these delicious, buttery sugar cookies for Christmas and plan on making them again for Valentine’s Day.
If you are making them with young children, I would suggest baking the cookies ahead of time. You can let kids help roll out the dough and cut them out, then plan to decorate another day. On the day you want to decorate your cookies, have all your baked cookies ready and give each child a bowl of their desired glaze color. Then provide lots of choices for sprinkles and colored sugar. It is a bit messy, so beware, but your kids will have a great time!
Sugar Cookies to Decorate Ingredients: 3 cups flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup white sugar 1 egg 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract 3/4 cup of room temperature butter Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. 2. In a small bowl, use a whisk to combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside. 3. With mixer, cream butter and sugar until creamy. Add vanilla and egg. 4. Slowly add flour mixture until dough forms. Refrigerate for about one hour. 5. On floured counter surface, roll out dough to about 1/4 inch thick. Dip cookie cutters in flour, then cut cookies. 6. Bake at 350 degrees on lightly greased baking sheet for 10-15 minutes until dough is very slightly colored brown on edges. 7. Cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes, then remove to wire rack to cool completely. Ready to decorate! Glaze for Cookies Ingredients: 1/4 cup of powdered sugar 1 teaspoon corn syrup 1-3 teaspoons of milk to thin out glaze Food coloring Directions: 1. Mix powdered sugar and corn syrup in small bowl. 2. Add small amounts of milk until glaze is thick like maple syrup. Add color to glaze as desired. 3. Using a spoon, put glaze over top of cookie, then cover with desired sprinkles. Let dry on rack. Enjoy!!
